If you have a train lover in the family, the Nene Valley Railway is a must-visit destination, especially for fans of the beloved Thomas the Tank Engine! Whether you're a lifelong fan of the iconic blue engine or introducing the magic to a new generation, there's something truly special about riding behind Thomas on his Branch Line.
For just £6 per person, you can board Thomas and enjoy unlimited rides from Wansford to Yarwell, making it a perfect day out that won’t break the bank. It’s an experience that families of all ages will love, with plenty of options to make the most of your visit. From exploring the historic surroundings to hopping aboard the main train to Peterborough, the railway offers a range of experiences that will keep everyone entertained.
During our visit, we were delighted by how easy it was to spend the day at the railway.
Stanley especially loved the miniature railway ride at Wansford Station (a must-do at just £1!) and was enchanted by all the Thomas-themed toys in the gift shop.
After all the excitement, we refuelled at the station café, which serves up tasty breakfast, lunch and a selection of cakes and ice creams.
The Nene Valley Railway is rich in history and one of the most amazing parts is meeting the real-life Thomas. The 0-6-0T engine No. 1800, built in 1947, was once a workhorse for the British Sugar Corporation in Peterborough. It spent its days hauling wagons of sugar beet until a diesel engine replaced it. In 1973, the Peterborough Railway Society rescued Thomas and he has since delighted generations of children and adults alike. Today, you can see Thomas at Wansford Station, where he’s often on display or hop on board for a ride that brings the timeless story to life.
There’s so much to do at the station, whether you’re just visiting for a quick ride or planning to make a full day of it. The café, open from breakfast through to lunch, offers a perfect spot to relax. You can also browse the wide selection of Thomas gifts in the gift shop and there’s even a charity shop for a great cause. Explore the riverside picnic area and the play area, which is a hit with little ones.
Ticket prices are incredibly affordable and with £6 giving you a whole day’s access to all the Thomas shuttles, it’s greatvalue. Kids aged 1-2 years can join in for just £6 and babies under 1 travel for free. Dogs are also welcome (and free!), making it a truly family-friendly experience. If you’d like to ride the main train to Peterborough as well, simply grab a Rover Ticket, which gives you access to the full line, including the Thomas shuttles.
Whether you're in it for the nostalgia of Thomas, the history of the Nene Valley Railway, or the sheer fun of the experience, a visit to the railway is an adventure you won’t want to miss.
