A Visit to: Windmill Farm Park | Kibworth, Leicestershire

Just 20 minutes from Rutland, Windmill Farm Park is the perfect family day out, nestled in the South Leicestershire countryside, where five generations have cared for the land and where little ones (and grown-ups!) can get stuck into the magic of farm life.

There’s something special about stepping into a working farm and meeting the animals up close. With over 30 rare and native breeds, there are plenty of friendly faces to meet, from rabbits and guinea pigs to lambs and donkeys.

Depending on the season, there are hands-on activities like Guinea pig fishing, egg collecting, pig brushing and bottle-feeding calves—it’s a proper farm experience where you can get truly involved. If you visit in early spring, you might even catch live lambing, which is such a lovely thing for little ones to see.

Beyond the barns and paddocks, there’s plenty of space to run, jump and explore. The giant bouncing pillows are a huge hit, along with the mini tractor school track. But the real hidden gem is Brian’s Wood, a magical woodland packed with sensory instruments, wooden playhouses and hidden corners just waiting to be discovered. It’s the kind of place where kids can let their imaginations run wild—one moment they’re woodland explorers and the next they’re making music with the natural instruments dotted along the trails.

And then there’s the indoor play barn, which has to be one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s easy to see why it’s award-winning! With multiple slides, climbing levels and a dedicated toddler and baby area. It kept Stanley (20 months), Penelope (7) and Edward (9) entertained for hours. They’d have happily stayed all day!

After all that excitement, the onsite café is a welcome break. There’s plenty of choice, great value and, crucially, good coffee. Edward gave the flatbread pizza a solid 9/10, and I had a perfectly brewed iced black Americano—a rare and wonderful find at a family attraction!

One of the things I love most is that there’s always something happening here. Whether it’s live lambing in February half-term, Easter festivities or even meeting Santa at Christmas, it seems there’s always a new reason to visit—plus it was clear some new areas were in the middle of construction too which I'm excited to return and explore.

We're already planning our next trip and can’t wait to bring friends and family who haven’t been yet.
